In a season that has been defined by a leaguewide spike in homers, deGrom has been particularly victimized by the long ball.

DeGrom had no theories about the sport's increasing home run rate and acknowledged it was "interesting". And right now, that's about the only thing the Mets can consistently count on. The Mets have lost three straight and come into the final series of the first half 11 games out of first place in the National League East. While winning a World Series title as a member of the Cubs last season, Fowler previously suited up for the Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros as well. The over is 11-5-4 in the Mets' last 20 during game two of a series, and 25-12-4 in the Mets' last 41 games versus a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.

Jacob deGrom allowed four home runs Friday night and has given up a career-high 17 in 111 innings pitched, one more than he allowed in 2015 in 191 innings pitched.

Fowler said recently that the injury has bothered him since his rookie year and has likely been the cause of other issues, like the quad strain he suffered earlier this season.

DeGrom retired the first six batters before allowing a leadoff homer to Randal Grichuk in the third inning, and Paul DeJong followed with another homer to even the score at 2-all. Bruce and Rivera gave the Mets wiggle room to withstand Jerry Blevins and Paul Sewald's combining to allow a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Gyorko.

The righty used a pair of inning-ending double-play grounders to end the fifth and sixth innings, and keep the Mets ahead.

Martinez burst onto the scene when he beat out Tommy Pham for the fourth outfielder spot in spring training. The Mets (39-45) snapped a three-game losing streak.

With deGrom and Martinez starting, it appeared Friday's game would be a low-scoring affair but it instead turned into an offensive showcase. Conforto went 3-for-4 in a rehab game Thursday with Class A St. Lucie. And if I'm playing tomorrow and the next, and I feel good, that's a real option. The Mets signed 32 of their 40 picks, including their top 13 selections.

In 3 2/3 innings July 1 against Philadelphia, Wheeler gave up two hits and two unearned runs in New York's come-from-behind 7-6 win. According to a source, the club has no plans to manage Wheeler's innings in the second half.
